Common Questions About Stairlifts in Scotland

How much does a stairlift cost in Scotland?

Prices vary depending on the type of stairlift and the complexity of your staircase. Reconditioned straight stairlifts start from around £995. New straight stairlifts typically cost from £1,800 to £3,000. Curved stairlifts are made to measure and start from around £3,450. All prices include survey, installation and a warranty. VAT is not charged if you have a long-term disability or illness.

Can I get a grant for a stairlift in Scotland?

Yes. In Scotland, stairlift funding is available through the Scheme of Assistance, administered by your local council. If your Occupational Therapist confirms a stairlift is essential, the council must fund at least 80% of the cost. Households receiving Pension Credit, Universal Credit or Income Support may qualify for 100% funding.

How long does stairlift installation take?

A straight stairlift can usually be installed in 2 to 4 hours. Curved stairlifts require a bespoke rail to be manufactured first, which typically takes 3 to 4 weeks, then installation takes around a day. Most customers are using their new stairlift the same day it is fitted.

Do stairlifts damage the stairs or walls?

No. Stairlift rails are fixed to the stair treads, not the walls. Only a small number of screws are used, leaving minimal marks if the stairlift is ever removed. There is no structural work involved and no damage to plasterwork or skirting boards.
