One of the first questions we get asked is whether to buy a new stairlift or a reconditioned one. There is no single right answer. It depends on your staircase, your budget and how quickly you need it. Here is an honest comparison to help you decide.
The short answer
For most people with a straight staircase, a reconditioned stairlift gives the best value. You get the same trusted brands at a much lower price, and it can often be fitted the day after your survey. A new stairlift makes more sense if your staircase is curved, if you want a particular model or feature, or if you simply prefer to buy new.

What "reconditioned" actually means
A reconditioned stairlift is not the same as a second-hand one bought privately. Before it is offered for sale, each unit is:
- stripped down and fully serviced, with worn parts replaced
- fitted with new batteries
- safety-tested, including every sensor, the seatbelt and the braking system
- cleaned and refreshed, with new upholstery where needed

When a reconditioned stairlift is the right choice
- You have a straight staircase. Straight rails can be cut to length, so reconditioned units fit most standard stairs.
- You need it quickly. A straight reconditioned stairlift can often be fitted the day after your survey. That matters after a fall, a hospital discharge or an operation.
- Budget matters. Saving over £1,000 on a straight stairlift is common.
- You are waiting on a grant. Council funding through the Scheme of Assistance can take months. A reconditioned stairlift can bridge that gap. Read more about stairlift grants in Scotland.
When a new stairlift makes more sense
- Your staircase is curved. A curved rail is made to measure for one staircase, so a reconditioned curved stairlift is only possible when a suitable unit is available. New curved stairlifts are built to fit your stairs exactly.
- You want a specific model or feature, such as a powered swivel seat, a powered footrest or a particular colour and upholstery.
- You want the longest possible warranty and the latest model.

Does VAT apply?
